:: I went to a soldier's funeral today::

I knew that on July 8th a soldier from Detroit Lakes, MN was killed in Iraq. He was the 4th national guardsman from my little town to die in the war.

Today was his funeral. I didn't know Spec Troy Linden, 22 but I heard that the phelps sickos were supposed to show up and the church was just walking distance from here. So I decided to go pay my respects and stand with the Patriot Guard Riders in case of any protest.

There were almost 1000 people including the mourners which spilled out into the middle school gym where a TV station from fargo set up a screen for them to attend the funeral.

They also played the speaker from the church outside the church so I stayed to listen. Beautiful eulogies about a kid who loved to snowboard and 4wheel in the mud, a brave kid who joined the Army in 2002 and was sent to Iraq with an engineering batallion in 2005 and died when an IED struck his humvee on a bridge in Ramadi 2 weeks ago.

I listened to the music and the prayers. Seems like half the town turned out.

There were about 300-400 patriot guard riders surrounding the church. I saw some people holding signs down a hill far away from the church, an officer told me there were a few protesters but no one was allowed to go down there. Fine with me.

The service was beautiful and I went there completely emotionally unprepared because I didn't know about this funeral until this morning.

When the honor guard and pall bearers brought the flag covered coffin out of the small church followed by 2 soldiers holding his pregnant mother by her arms while she sobbed followed by Troy's father holding a 5 or 6 yr old boy and a teen age girl behind them.

I lost my breath. There it was, the cost of war 15 feet in front of my face.

I was given a flag to hold by one of the patriot riders and stood lining the street with all the other very sad faced americans standing with me while the patriot riders escorted the hearse and the 5 military vans carrying the young family and all the friends vehicles passed me. I stood with my hand over my heart and all I could think about is what a waste of a life.

It's taken me about an hour to be able to post this.

I'm overwhelmed. Bless Spec. Linden for his service and bless his family in their time of loss.

I've now been to more military funerals than the commander and chief. How very sad.

Bush arrival prompts heated exchange between protester, Bush fans

Heated words were exchanged at the Yuma County Fairgrounds this morning when a protester held up an anti-President Bush sign as the president was arriving in Yuma.

The sign held up by Yuma resident Ed Snook read: "Save America, Impeach Bush; 2,455 U.S. Dead Because You Misled."

People gathered in the fairgrounds parking lot, hoping to see Bush's arrival at Yuma International Airport aboard Air Force One, began heckling Snook as he walked along 32nd Street, sign in hand.

"Get rid of that sign," said one person.

Snook, responding to hecklers, said he had a right to walk along the street in protest.

One man eventually pulled the sign out of Snook's hand and destroyed it.

The exchange occurred moments after Air Force One landed. Bush exited the airplane, shook hands with local officials and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano and then joined a motorcade that took him to San Luis, Ariz., for a tour of the border.

Bush planned to tour the border to see the problem of illegal immigration first-hand.

Army rescinds enlistment of autistic teen
Military officials announced today that they will release an 18-year-old autistic man from his enlistment obligation.

Last month, Jared Guinther, diagnosed with autism at age 3, came home with papers showing that he not only had enlisted in the U.S. Army, but also had signed up for its most dangerous job: cavalry scout.

Guinther was scheduled to leave for basic training Aug. 16, but Army officials launched an investigation into potential recruiting violations after The Oregonian began reporting on his story last week.

Officials are examining whether recruiters at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Southeast Portland improperly concealed Jared's disability, which should have made him ineligible for service.

The investigation will continue, but Guinther will be released from his enlistment, said Gary Stauffer, a civilian spokesman for the Army recruiting battalion in Portland.

Jared's parents, Paul and Brenda Guinther, told the newspaper last week that they asked recruiting officials to review Jared's medical records before making a final decision on his enlistment.

The Guinthers said their offer was declined. They were not immediately available for comment today.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., wrote today to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld calling for "a full investigation" into Jared's case "and into military recruitment practices that have led to a record number of reported abuses and improprieties in the recruitment process."

Recruiters nationwide are under pressure to hit ambitious enlistment targets this year. Tracking by the Pentagon shows that complaints about recruiting improprieties are on pace to approach record highs set in 2003 and 2004.

Last year, the active Army and the Army Reserve each missed enlistment targets for the first time since 1999. This year, they have a combined recruiting goal of 105,500 soldiers.

The Portland recruiters under scrutiny, Sgt. Alejandro Velasco and Cpl. Ronan Ansley, will continue to work during the Army's investigation, which could take until the end of May to complete, Stauffer said.

Jared Guinther is 18. Tall and lanky, he will graduate from Marshall High School in June. Girls think he's cute, until they try to talk to him and he stammers or just stands there -- silent.

Diagnosed with autism at age 3, Jared is polite but won't talk to people unless they address him first. It's hard for him to make friends. He lives in his own private world.

Jared didn't know there was a war raging in Iraq until his parents told him last fall -- shortly after a military recruiter stopped him outside a Southeast Portland strip mall and complimented him on his black Converse All Stars.

"When Jared first started talking about joining the Army, I thought, 'Well, that isn't going to happen,' " said Paul Guinther, Jared's father. "I told my wife not to worry about it. They're not going to take anybody in the service who's autistic."

But they did. Last month, Jared came home with papers showing that he not only had enlisted, but also had signed up for the Army's most dangerous job: cavalry scout. He is scheduled to leave for basic training Aug. 16.

There were 2 major protests this weekend.

The first on Friday when high school and college students in Minneapolis walked out of the class rooms, marched to a recruiting station where several brave kids threw red paint on the building. Six kids were arrested for vandalism.

Then on Saturday hundreds of thousands marching in NYC for peace. Cindy Sheehan, Al Sharpton and Susan Sarandon were all in attendance. And amazingly there were NO arrests. We can always count on NYC to support PEACE!

American Soldier Killed in Iraq

A U.S. Army soldier died Saturday when a roadside bomb hit his convoy near Baghdad, the military said.

The attack occurred southwest of the capital at about 4 p.m., the military said. The soldier's identity was not released.

The attack raised to 70 the number of U.S. service members who have died in Iraq this month, according to an Associated Press count. At least 2,399 members of the U.S. military have died since the war began.

A silent daily protest by wearing a simple black armband that says "NO WAR" on your arm. Wear it to work, to school, to the store, everywhere. Spread the word about the armbands. Protesters Block Bush From Meeting At Stanford

(CBS 5/AP) STANFORD, Calif. Plans by President Bush to attend a private meeting at Stanford University's conservative Hoover Institution were canceled Friday evening when protesters blocked his motorcade from going through the only entrance.

Instead, the session was moved to the Palo Alto home of former Secretary of State George Shultz.

Shultz was already scheduled to host a private gathering Friday night for the president.

Organizers of the demonstration outside the institution say at least three people were arrested for sitting in an intersection.

The president was also greeted by a crowd of about 500 protesters during a stop outside of Cisco Systems earlier Friday.

The Polish Underground

Wearing either stolen German uniforms or just plain street clothes, these homemade soldiers were the Polish Underground -- the resistance fighters of Nazi-occupied Poland. Fathers, grandfathers and young boys fought side by side with only red and white armbands for identification. They came together to defend, as best as they could, their beloved homeland. They fought with Polish pistols and German "shmyzers", automatic sub-machine guns, which they either stole or bought from the Nazis. They concealed their precious cache in cemeteries and hospital grounds.

The city sewers became their staging area, their Headquarters and their passage ways. The younger ones -- teenagers worked as liaisons, running through the sewers smuggling supplies and passing cryptic messages and orders.

"One night," says Borowski, "we got the order that our armbands must be switched before dawn from our left arms to our right arms." The Germans had infiltrated their ranks. "In the morning we were instructed to shoot anyone wearing an armband on their left arm."

Through the wet stinking sewers they moved like rats in sewage that was sometimes chest high. "We would have to dismantle our weapons," says Borowski, "and carry them along with our ammunition over our heads so they would not get wet."

In one almost comic military operation, Borowski, who speaks perfect German, dressed himself in a stolen Tirolean mountaineer's outfit -- complete with a feathered hat. With the help of three of his men, who followed discreetly in a "borrowed" German automobile, Borowski befriended three Nazi police officers. The charlatan then coyly maneuvered the German officers into a quiet cull-de-sac where his three partners were waiting.

By day Borowski worked within the walls of the Warsaw Ghetto as an engineer at the Tyton Fabryka at Dzeilna 62. Taking advantage of his freedom to pass through the well-guarded gates without suspicion, Borowski smuggled weapons, ammunition and forged documents inside for the Jewish Underground. He also worked with the Jewish Underground secretly preparing selected Jewish men and boys for combat.

"Zegota" was the cryptic code-name that became the word for the Polish Council of Assistance to the Jews (Rada Pomocy Zdom) established with the approval of several Polish organizations on December 4, 1942. Headquartered in Warsaw, Zegota had branches in several cities and major villages throughout Poland. Zegota aided the Jews both inside and outside the ghettos by providing forged documents, food, lodging, medicine and financial support.
